ANOTHER SNOW DAY in the books!  Whew, April is a crazy month.  I pray you've all found time for rest and relaxation.

Next week is bound to be a crazy one, too.  I sent out an email requesting items for a book report at the end of the month.  Please send in those items by April 29th (unless you have milk, then please don't send any earlier than 4/29 - but would even be better to have that by May 3rd!).  We have book clubs happening again RIGHT now.  So, your child has a book to read and must be reading to keep up with their club.  Don't hesitate to have them read out loud to you or for you to read it alongside them!  Discussion and accountability help to keep reading effective and productive!  The book reports will be due on May 3rd.  The rubrics will go out before then, but the students will have the week of April 29th - May 3rd to complete the project.  We are finishing the books on April 29th.  Each group will need to find a time OUTSIDE OF SCHOOL to complete their group project.  I know that this is not ideal, but we will be doing MAPS testing and number of other activities in class, so this will be their "homework" for a couple of nights that week.  I encourage you parents to discuss a time/day that works between all of the members.  The groups are 3-4 students, so you won't have to coordinate too many schedules.  I encourage finding 2 hours either at a house, a library, or even here at STJ after school hours!

Looking ahead::
MONDAY::  Dare @ 8:30 AM
                     Love and Logic FREE Seminar @ 5:30 PM

What a morning!  Evie and I just got home from FUNDay and WHOA!  It was busy, loud, fun, crazy, and exciting!  Thanks to everyone for joining us this morning, contributing money, time, excitement, and/or donations for this day to be the success that it is!  What an amazing chance to support our school, see our friends, and provide some more $$ to a newer, safer BUS!

This past week was filled with sickness - YUCK!  I'm praying for health and focus for our class this next week.  Even though we had students in and out all week, I was so encouraged by the FOCUS that each student brought each day to attend to discussions, work, and each other.  It's been a lot of work to become independent, hard-working 5th graders, but LET ME TELL YOU, it's HAPPENING!  It's so exciting and energizing to watch!

WHOA!  This past week was filled with fun and accountability!  We had our first "PAY DAY" on Thursday - PI DAY!  As a class, we will be seeing more of these PAY DAYS happening throughout the rest of the year!

PI DAY consisted of activities all revolving around the math term Pi!
We defined Pi.  We used Pi in math.  We read about how Pi is used in the world.  We wrote an opinion piece on whether or not Pi deserves its own holiday.  We played a Pi game.  We sorted the author's purpose into PIE (persuasive, informative, and entertaining).  Then, we ate PIE!
The kids loved having this "day off", which was actually still a day of learning!  We met some MN State objectives throughout these activities, so WIN-WIN for all!

To participate in this/any future PAY DAYS, I need to be clear with not only the students, but also parents!  To get "paid", students must do their work well and COMPLETELY.  Well means that it is done to the very best of their ability, asking for help from their parents, giving their best effort, and asking Mrs. Oldre for questions when those different tactics fail.  As a team, all 3 parties (STUDENTS, parents, and teacher) have to work together to get these Pay Days.

In addition to that fun on Thursday, we also had Family Groups on Friday where we went on scavenger hunts around the school!  FUN!

Next week, GET READY!

Wednesday:: Field Trip to Minneapolis Institute of Art
                              If you are wanting to download the app for the audio tour, it must be done BEFORE you come to school on Wednesday.  The app costs $2.99.  If you'd like to pay for your child take the audio tour available at the museum, the cost is $6.00.  Please bring a completely disposable lunch!
